Popplet Group Four: Celebrations
Inspired by: Nick Cave
This studio was our first studio that was through celebrations. The goal was to celebrate something about ourselves. I chose to create a sunshine tiger. The sun represents that this summer I am Mizzou Summer Welcome Leader. The tiger is of course for the Missouri Tigers!
I would definitely use this studio in my classroom. Not only would students love the work of Nick Cave, I feel that they would find it as a great source of inspiration for their own work. This would be great to incorporate a variety of subjects. It would be possible to do this with literacy and characters that we celebrate. It would also be possible to think of celebrated historical figures for social studies. There are many possibilites to explore with students including people, places, personal attributes or stories, and fictional characters.

Inspired by: Norman Rockwell
I found this studio to be the most difficult. The problem was that I couldn't decide what story to tell. This studio asked you to create a magazine cover that featured a personal photograph and include story titles on the cover. Our goal was to incorporate the theme of celebrations by celebrating something from everyday life. I bounced around between a variety of ideas and decided upon a magazine called "Empty Nest" that would be geared toward parents that have children that have moved out and are in college. Then I was faced with the next task of what stories would I want included in the magazine. I chose to celebrate the time parents have when their children are finally "out of the nest" and also to specifically celebrate the times when their children come back home in this issue.
This studio is one that I would be more hesitant to use in my classroom. As I become more familiar with computer programs though, it could be more of a possibility. I would want to make sure that I would be able to effectively answer any student questions. Also, I think that this studio has a great potential to allow students to experiment with juxtaposition as well as connecting their photos with stories.

Inspired by: Miriam Shapiro
This studio asked us to celebrate something about ourselves. I chose to create a room similar to how Shapiro created doll houses. Also, because she was very active in the movement of women artists, I chose to do something that represents my "girl power". I created my garage back home. I used clay to create a variety of things found in our garage. I chose the garage because my Mom and I always do projects around the house from painting, to tiling, planting, and installing toilets.
This studio could be implemented as an artist choice studio in the classroom as well. I would have to be very mindful of the classroom management with so many different supplies bouncing around. However, I do think that this is an excellent opportunity for students to connect the theme of identity to the theme of celebrations. It would allow the students to come full circle in the unit sequence.
