Popplet Group One: Identity
Inspired by Matisse:
In this project we were asked to think of three important events that have shaped our lives. The favorite memory that has shaped my identity is summers with my Grandpa. I chose to incorporate Scooby Doo and a hot dog because I used to watch Scooby Doo every day while I had my hot dog for lunch. My Grandpa always makes the best hot dogs and bread and butter. I also included a sun and a diving board because almost every day after watching Scooby Doo, I would go swimming with my cousins and Grandpa would be the judge for our diving board contests. I kept this composition simple and bright because it reminds me of myself as a kid. I kept things simple and didn't like anything flashy or too involved and I loved bright colors and anything happy. These traits that I incorporated in the composition are still part of my identity now. I am best friends with my Grandpa and still love the hot dogs he makes and swimming in the pool. I love anything cheerful and simple.
The Matisse lesson could be incorporated into my classroom at the beginning of the year. I would choose to use this project at the beginning of the year in coordination with identity in order to learn more about my students and gradually use this knowledge of my students to establish a sense of community.

Inspired by Chuck Close:
This studio focused on two parts of our identities. Deciding which Disney characters that were a protagonist and an antagonist for my personality was difficult at first. I did not feel that I related that closely with any "villans". My least favorite characteristics about myself are my clumsiness and forgetfulness which I thought were very relatable to Dopey. I found that Tiana represented me very well is many ways. She is kind, goal oriented, and is confident. This studio closely related to the unit theme of identity because it asks the artist to look closely at things that could normally be considered flaws in their personality. I chose to put a layer of tracing paper over it because I felt that although the personalities were close to mine, they did not perfectly represent me.
This studio would work well in my future classroom. I would not make any major changes to the studio. However, I would open the character set to include any well known story book characters. This could be integrated into a literacy lesson as well.

Inspired by Wegman:
In this project we were asked to create a mixed media composition that blended animal characteristics with fairy tales. I chose the three fairies from "Sleeping Beauty" to be mixed with hens. The fairies were very nosey in Sleeping Beauty's love life. At some points in the movie they resembled three old hens just clucking away at each other. This project related to the idea of Identity by seeing what animalistic characteristics do people embody.
I would use this lesson in my classroom to integrate literacy. It would be useful to see if students were able to pick out details from a story to support their artistic decisions.
